In 1993, Fortis acquired an interest in ASLK-CGER, a Belgian bank and insurer, from the Belgian system. In July 1998, Fortis Bank completed the merger with Generale Bank of Belgium. In a takeover in two phases, Fortis acquired 98.2% of Generale Bank, which merged later with ASLK-CGER in June 1999 to form FortisBank.
The mixture of de-ASLK CGER, Generale Bank, VSB Bank and MeesPierson (excluding MeesPierson Private Banking) was completed in 2000. In 2002, Fortis acquired 100% of Intertrust Group.
On September 28 and October 10, 2008, the Belgian Fortis Group acquired 99.93% stake in Fortis Bank Belgium, the main shareholder (94.1%) of Fortis Turkey. This transfer of shares has closed from 13.05.2009 and BNP Paribas became the main shareholder of Fortis Bank Belgium. Fortis Bank Belgium is the majority shareholder of Fortis Bank Turkey owning 94.11% of shares and the Belgian State retains 25% of shares Fortis Bank Belgium.

The Dutch Government was satisfied with last year's three-way break takeover of ABN Amro by Royal Bank of Scotland, Fortis and Santander. In recent weeks, the weight of the offer for ABN in the balance sheet of Fortis had undermined confidence in the bank, sending its shares down and threatening a run on deposits.
The governments of Belgium and Luxembourg Netherlands said the acquisition will not affect their purchases of shares in Fortis
